Prospective member saying hello
« on: July 03, 2008, 11:25:03 AM »
Hi everyone. I've been a longtime lurker here and have been interested in joining the fsw for a while. I have a hard time posting on forums for some reason so I never do, but it's high time I introduced myself here.

I am 22 years old and was born and raised here in Bedford county, Pennsylvania. I am a pretty quiet person and have a lifelong interest in guns, shooting and gunsmithing. I come from a very conservative family, was homeschooled and just graduated from college with a degree in business, though I'm still working my dead-end job at wal-mart (I know, I know...)

To make a long story short, I got into libertarianism and fsw by reading Boston's books, lurked here for a while, forgot my password and was absent for a long time. Now that I have finished school my hunger to get out of PA and get my life moving has come back. My job has become almost unbearable and I want to quit. The only thing keeping me from Wyoming really is a job and place to stay, and of course the task of moving across the country. (maybe I should see wyoming before I do ::))

Anyway, I need 10 meaningful posts before I can become a member so here's number 1  :)

Hi Kevin,

I looked up Bedford County, because it sounded familiar.  Used to pass through Breezewood all the time going home from college to visit my family in Ohio.  I miss that trip.

Anyways, welcome (back)!  Sounds like you're in the perfect setup to relocated to Wyoming to me.  Young, just out of college with a degree in business, single (it seems) and fairly unattached.  I'm a tad jealous.

Good luck to you!

Small world! Breezewood is a stone's throw from where I work.

Yeah, I'm single and unattached, though my parents will miss me I guess. I'm the last of my siblings to leave; one brother married in ohio, one off to the coast guard, sister married and long gone.

Anyway thanks for being the first to greet me.

Welcome to FSW Kevin. Do try to come out and visit this summer. The economy is in good shape here so you shouldn't have to much trouble finding work.

Kevin, you're in a unique position to make the move to WY.  Career not started yet, not attached, no house/property to sell, not a lot of 'stuff', etc.  Just save a little dough, hop in the truck and go.

A PERFECT time to make the move.  You can always visit your parents, and who knows, maybe after a few visits to see you, they'll make the move as well?

Thanks everyone, your words are very encouraging.

Mamaliberty, that get together sounds great! I'll definitely try to make it out for that, if not before... We'll see.

I have to leave for work now, but I'll be back.

Welcome to the forum Kevin.

Some advice from an old man:  If you feel the urge to move to Wyoming, don't wait.  Get your gear together and get moving.  You'll be glad you did.

You said it, Bobcat.

Kevin, as someone who's in a similar boat, I can really empathize with your situation. I would add that if you have anything of value that you can sell and wouldn't mind parting with to raise some bucks, then make a list of those items and get on it ASAP. Time is $$$ and waits for no one. Probably wouldn't hurt to cut a few corners on whatever living expenses you can in the meantime, as every little bit helps. Good luck!

I definitely feel the urge, it's the job question that is holding me back. Ideally there would be a job waiting for me when I got there, but job searching cross country is hard. The only other thing to do is just go out there and search when I get there, which could mean I'll be unemployed for an unknown amount of time and that makes me a little nervous. Can't decide what to do.

Kevin,

With your degree in business...have you started a business yet?  One of the candidates on "The Apprentice" made an interesting comment as he was leaving (paraphrased):  "I learned you get get a whole new start-up up and running in 24 hours."  Maybe you should scout around a bit and see what's needed out there.

Well Howdy Kevin, Let me ask you something. What kinds of work have you done ? You mentioned Walmart, could you transfer or just hire on at a walmart in Wyoming when you get to Wyoming ? This would get you a paycheck while you look around and find something you might like better. There are lots of jobs in Wyoming ,just depends on what you are willing to do.

Ever thought of starting or running a business ? What type of business interests you ?

crebralfix,
Starting a small biz is something I would like to do someday, but don't know what to make one out of right now. I think I would need to be in WY first to find a "niche". Cute quote from the Apprentice, btw, and easier said than done in my opinion.

Miles,
Yeah, wal-of-china-mart is an option and I'll keep it open. My work experience is pretty limited to my 1+ year at WM and various odd restaurant jobs I have had while going to school. I guess the best thing going for me is that whatever I'm doing I am always a hard worker. Laziness was not tolerated in my house growing up as neither parent was raised in a wealthy home.

Anyways, I want to do this so I'll find work doing something.

Kevin,

In most parts of Wyoming right now, if you can breathe and walk you get get a job doing something (and I mean legal, that is). The energy industry is driving the economy at full-steam here and this likely won't change for at least another couple of years. Now's the time to come out, get the lay of the land, and make plans.
