visiting / moving to WY
« on: February 12, 2009, 01:14:47 PM »
My wife Debra Jean and I rescinded our pledges to NH FSP.
http://forum.freestateproject.org/index.php?topic=16876.0

While that may smack of "not keeping your word", we feel it's totally keeping our word, as opposed to staying pledged and then never moving there.

Wyoming is just making a lot more sense to us. Especially after further research and soul searching. Also influential was that after I announced on here that we were going to move to NH instead, no one slammed us, several here were still polite to us, and Boston signed a copy of Molon Labe to me "We'll miss you in Wyoming." I was very touched by that.

While there are some great people on the NH board who I like a lot, even as a pledged member I found myself frequently defending myself against several others who basically believe the same things I believe, but wanted to argue over some minutia. Or just argue.

To avoid rescinding anything going forward, we're not going to pledge to WY FSP until we've visited the state and met some members in person. We want to meet you, and I assume as potential members, you'll want to meet us.

DJ (Debra Jean) visited Yellowstone a couple times as a kid with her parents and loved it, and I had dinner at a truck stop near Gillette while passing through, but that's pretty much our hands-on experience with the state. (Whereas I used to summer in NH, DJ's never been there.) We need to see, touch, sniff the lay of the land in person before making a pledge to a place that we intend to be where we'll spend the rest of our lives. We think that's the sane way to do it.

So, Debra Jean has vacation this year from May 23-June 6th. Both of our birthdays happen in that window too, so that will add to the fun of the trip. We plan on spending a healthy portion of that time checking out Wyoming. We figure two days each way to drive there with resting, and about five days in WY.

We'd love to meet some of you and have dinner and maybe a shoot. (We've never touched a battle rifle, and I'll admit it up front, DJ's a much better shot than me with the sidearm and Marlin 60 "bunny gun." We both practice as much, but she's more a natural. Cindy from Appleseed told me "Don't worry, your wife can protect you." lol...)

If we love it in Wyoming, we hope to be able to move sometime between 18 months and 3 years from now. It will involve selling our house, finding a WY house (with a little land), tying up loose ends, and finding DJ employment.

I write and can do my work from anywhere, but Debra Jean has a good job here in SoCal, with good pay and perks. We've thought of things she could do in WY for work. Basically it boils down to:

-- Working in an office in WY as a paralegal (don't know yet if there's much work for that, but she has 15 years at the same job, is really good at it, and can get awesome letters of recommendation).
-- Working in an office as an executive assistant or administrative assistant. She'd be great at it, though she is overqualified.
-- Telecommute as a paralegal (unlikely that would happen).
-- Telecommute doing editing and proofreading. (She's really great at it, but it's hard to get work. We're going to work on getting her work doing that, from here in SoCal, starting now.)
-- Telecommute doing voiceover. (She's really great at it, but it's hard to get work. We're going to work on getting her work doing that, from here in SoCal, starting now.)
-- Starting something new that she'd love to do, that might not make any money for a while (raising dogs comes to mind).

Thoughts on all of this post are invited and welcome.

Thank you,

You are the only one who can judge that. I've had to take back quite a few things I meant sincerely when I said them. Times change and people change. If your change of heart didn't harm anyone, no fault, no foul.

I'm awful glad. We're not all angels here either, and some have more than a little rough edges... but I think by and large we're all dedicated to live and let live. We don't want others to run our lives, so it is pointless for us to run yours. :)

There are nitpickers and folks who love to argue in every crowd. The trick is just to ignore them and leave them to argue with themselves. Takes two, you know.  >:D

Of course. Makes perfect sense. We'll do our darndest to help you fall in love with Wyoming as much as we are. :)

Shoot! You'll just miss our June campout. But you'll be able to meet quite a few folks driving around. Any ideas what areas you plan to visit? I do hope you put Weston and Crook counties on your map because there are quite a few of us in a relatively small area and we're always glad to show off our beautiful bit of heaven.

You bet! I'm always up to go shooting. You'll be my guest at one of the nicest gun clubs in the state. We've got lots of great places to eat, and some of us can even cook!! LOL

Good luck! I sincerely hope there is enough time for you to make the ideal arrangements.  :-X

For one thing, you won't need to make as much money as you do in Kalifornia because the cost of living is much lower here. Just the taxes alone are incredibly lower, and no income tax.  And the more you can do for yourself, of course, the smaller the cost of living. Lots of opportunity and incentive here to learn new skills and share those you have.

As for finding jobs, the picture on that changes constantly and you'll probably get a much better idea what's available once you get here. A lot of small places don't advertise, especially not on the internet job sites. But you'll never know until you come find out for yourself. :)

There is land and a few nice homes available around here, and if prices go down you might find some really sweet deals. You just never know until you look.

God bless you, and I hope to see you soon.  ~W~ ~W~

Thank you both, Rich and MamaLiberty. All this sounds wonderful.

And MamaLiberty, your reply after we previously opted for NH helped encourage us to do more research. I pretty much thought you had to be Jeremiah Johnson to live in WY, until you told us otherwise. It swayed us a bit for sure. We're not creampuffs, but we're not natural woodsmen either.

The fact that you used to live where we live and are happy now in WY helped.

Thank you for being "emotional concierge to future SoCal ex-pats."

Shame you can't extend your stay a couple of days. There is an Appleseed in Newcastle the 6th and 7th of June. Great way to meet a bunch of us at once.

We'll pow wow tonight and look into it tomorrow. Her vacation days are usually set in stone once she's put in for them (which she has) and they've been approved (which they have), but she might be able to change it just this once.

We did a lot of online actuary crunching of job info / population / etc. last night and Casper is looking most attractive to our livin' needs, esp. with regards to Debra Jean and employment. Probably outside of Casper, but not terribly far. Thoughts on Casper are welcome.

As for our visit, she's trying to change her vacation dates so we can make the Appleseed.

Yay!

MWD and DJD, great news, As your plans come together let us know what areas you are planning to visit. Will you be coming in through Utah or Colorado? (Highways I-80 or
I-70 to I-25) Making a big loop or going straight to Casper? With the right planning you should be able to meet with lots of FSW folks along the way.

Sounds good.

Will ask DJ tonight. She's the navigator in the household, as well as actuary and royal proofreader.

My right brain is huge, my left brain is a walnut. She's great with both.

Yay! DJ's time shift of days off was approved. We'll be able to make the Appleseed in WY. Will sign up tonight.

Going to the range here today to find Richard and Cindy and take another rifle lesson.
