Looking to live and let live
« on: September 12, 2009, 11:22:44 PM »
Hi Folks:  I am new here.  I just happened upon this Forum tonight and am so pleased I did.  Please, allow me to tell you a little about myself and why I am considering moving to Wyoming.  First and foremost, I respect and advocate individual rights and limited government.  I currently live in New York and am trying desperately to get out of this awful place before it sucks every last dollar out of me.  I am looking to move to a place with limited government, low taxes, good neighbors, and where residents understand a firearm is not inherently evil.  By trade, I am an attorney (former prosecutor now in private practice) and an educator.  I recently visited Wyoming, beginning in Cheyenne and working my way up to Sheridan and then over to Cody.  I think Wyoming offers what I am looking for.  While I liked the Big Horn Basin area, as well as Buffalo and Cody, where I end up will depend upon employment.  I hope I can find a job out there and do so soon.  Any insight you may have would be appreciated.  Thank you and I hope you will welcome me into your community.

limited government.

Oh noes, another minarchist!   ;D

Just kidding, glad you're here.  Are you still looking to do lawyering in Wyoming?  They love lawyers in Jackson, and have boocoo $$$ over there, but it's probably not the kind of place you'd want to move to. And you'd have to compete with Spence.

Say, if you're a lawyer, you must be good at pedantic, angels on the head of a pin debating?  If so, you and I will get along fine.  :D

Sorry, it's late and I'm really tired but can't sleep.  I don't mean to sound inhospitable, if it comes off that way. I really am glad to see new, decent people come on board, and I'm sure the others will offer a more standard welcome.

Welcome Freedog! I'm sure Wyoming could use another "Spence" type lawyer. Just have to understand that not everyone is going to instantly trust any sort of lawyer - just have to let them come along as they get to know you.

There is a ton of information on this forum about Wyoming, climate, jobs, housing and much more. Please read through as much as you can, but feel free to ask questions. And please plan to visit Wyoming again as soon as you can! Then you can meet some of the FSW folks and begin to make use of our network for new immigrants. It's gotten pretty awesome!

As always, if you come to Newcastle, plan to visit MamaLiberty and the bunch around here. The coffee (or beer) is always on. :)

Hello Freedog.

It's very cool that you have already been to visit Wyoming, what were your influences?

Many, though not all, of us were made aware of Wyoming through the writtings of Boston T. Partry (Molon Labe, Hologram of Liberty, The Gun Bible, etc.).

BTW, it's always good to know a sharpe law-dog, please to meet you!

Edited for spelling.

Welcome to the forum and to being a resident of this great State and geographical area. I've been here a long time and I never tire of it, there is so much to do and only so much time to do it in here. This is the place if your looking for freedom and a place to put up a fight for it. Our gov. is curdling fast.

Hi again Freedog.  I reread my post from last night, and it does come off a little unwelcoming.  I apologize for that, I was a little punchy, and as MamaLiberty said, there is some initial wariness toward lawyers.  But I'm sure everybody here knows there are good lawyers that do good work, and that can be a huge boon to the freedom movement.

What I said about the minarchy and the debating is a bit of an inside joke about things here, that of course you wouldn't know the context for, and might interpret as being pokes at you or your beliefs.  That's not it at all.  We have some anarchists here, I am one, but it is not an anarchist board nor movement. It's about getting back to a true originalist constitutional federal republic. Even more so, it's about living a good life in a relatively free part of a mostly unfree country, and about helping each other out. We do have some good-natured arguments over differing political visions, but we all get along fine and are working toward the same general goals.  I am one of those who jumps at the chance for pedantic, "angels on the head of a pin" arguments, but it's usually all in fun, and in the end, we're pretty much all about business and getting things done here.

I'm not in Wyoming yet, I'm still an outsider, so I always feel awkward about welcoming people to the state, but I do welcome you to the board.

As I said, I'd guess that Jackson, from a strictly income point of view, might be the best place for a lawyer to set up shop, but it's the very liberal part of the state.  Almost like Wyoming's Berkely or Boulder.  I'm sure there's work to be had all over, and a lawyer ready to fight the good fight could succeed and be welcomed anywhere in the state. Others probably have more detailed insights about that.

Howdy Freedog!

I'm very new here myself, but still want to welcome you to the messageboard and the virtualwyoming of which it is a part.  I'm a fellow "minarchist", as Kylben would say.  I too have the smell of law upon me... which certainly makes for interesting discussions around here.  But fear not, this is a place of varied viewpoints.

I hope you enjoy the discussions, and that one day soon we will both find our way to Wyoming.

Pleased to meet you.  Yes, I hope to practice law or teach out there.  I didn't visit the Jackson area on my trip, as I heard it was a lot different than the Wyoming I am looking for, as there have been a lot of people moving in and trying to make it California.

Yes, I believe in limited government.  Heck, I read the Fountainhead when I was 19-years-old and then Atlas Shrugged and everything else she wrote.  That led me to read Jefferson, Madison, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Federalist Papers, and a whole lot of libertarian thinkers after that (e.g., Henry Hazlitt, Walter Williams, Thomas Sowell, Randy Barnett, David Boaz, Richard Epstein, to name a few).   I don't call myself an Objectivist, though, because I don't like describing myself as anything but an individual with an active mind.  The concept of individual rights is the reason I became a lawyer.  Of course, when I took Constitutional Law in school it was quite depressing to see what the Court has done to the Constitution.  Now, I help people create businesses and protect their intellectual property.

Thank you for your reply and welcome.  As far as the "minarchist" comment, no worries, I'll see you on the head of the pin at high noon. :)

Hello Freedog.

It's very cool that you have already been to visit Wyoming, what were your influences?

Thank you for your welcome.  Actually, I have a friend who moved to Montana and was trying to convince me to move there.  So I started looking into it.  I was in a book store one day and happened to see a book ("The Daily Coyote") written by someone who moved to Wyoming.  I read it.  Wyoming sounded like an interesting place to live, so I started researching it.  I saw it had no state income tax, respects the Second Amendment, and seemed like a place where people were friendly.  So, I made the trip to see what it was like in person and met a lot of good people.  After I returned, I was doing some further research and "Googled" the term "libertarian states" and came up with this site.  It is just one of those things that seems to be falling into place.

"The Daily Coyote"- that looks interesting.
I'm going to post in 'Books We like' to see if anyone has read it.

Check that, Kunkmiester has already posted;
