Prospects for a young person in Wyoming?
« on: August 07, 2007, 08:12:24 PM »
Hello there.

I'm a 23 year old guy from Minnesota seeking a place to call home. I was a supporter of the FSP many years ago, but I've pretty much been ignoring it for a long time due to other things happening in my life. I just recently found out about the FSW project, after a few weeks of researching Wyoming as a potential place to make a living.

I'm wondering what the job prospects out there are. I have a year of college behind me and probably won't be going back. Is it possible, as a 23 year old in good shape with a very diverse job background to get a decent job in the state? I've done factory work, maintenance, technical support, housekeeping, etc. etc. I've been working since I was about 13. I don't care much what the job is as long as I can support myself, which also raises the question on what the cost of living/rent etc are. I don't mind making $7 an hour if rent is only $200 a month.

I guess the main question is if a young guy who works hard and learns fast can make a living out there, enough to support himself and maybe a family in the future. Keep in mind I don't have a degree and don't really plan on ever getting one.

Moonshine,
Welcome to the forum.
Everything I've ever read here indicates that anyone looking for a job will find one quickly in WY. We've had people come here for the Jamboree and have a job after being here 2 days!

There's plenty of construction jobs. If you are able bodied, responsible, and willing to put in a day's work for a day's pay you'll have no problems here. Others on this forum can elaborate.

Take a look around the forum. We have a topic relating just to jobs. Check it out.

MS I had a job after a ten minute interview after driving 1800 miles. There is a lot of jobs here and they are looking for anyone with skills.

There is no better place for a person in your circumstances, than here.  Nowhere.

You need to be real flexible in your living arrangements, finding a place to live while sorting through the jobs will be much harder than will be finding employment.  Set up your truck, buy a small RV trailer, or whatever.  Otherwise you hemmorage your seed money with motels and restaraunt meals.

Back in the glory days of helicopter seismographing, in Alpine, there was about sixty helicopters flying out of that place every morning.  And there was nowhere to live.  People had jobs, and slept where they could.  Crew vans were slept in, they got the nomenclature of "Ritter Hotels."  Don't know where that name came from, but people worked and got by as best they could.  If the Ritter Hotel was full, people slept under it.

That was a generation ago.  The spirit is still here, if you are up to being flexible.

As long as I have my Sleep Number Bed with 2,000 thread-count sheets and pillows made out of Golden Eagle down, I'm happy.

Just kidding, of course. I've bunked out under the stars before, no stranger to roughing it. Don't give a damn about living glamorously. I lived in an apartment that was barely more than a bed and a bathroom for two years and loved it. However, driving down there with nothing but a few hundred bucks, a Ford Probe, and the guns seems like a bad idea. I'd like to have a job and place to stay arranged before I make the trip.

Right now I work at resort that provides housing. What are the chances of having something like that down there? Not necessarily resort work. Maybe working as a general handyman with a guy who has a trailer on the property somewhere.

Sorry, forgot something. I'm wondering about the CCW laws. Around here it's difficult to get a spot in the required class unless you're in the "good old boys" club. I'm "in" that club around here so I didn't have any trouble, but if the same attitude is present in Wyoming I'm sure I'd have difficulty, especially considering my age.

If you attended a Minnesota gun safety course or the Minnesota Hunter Education class and still can find your certificate, that's all you need in Wyoming to meet the state training requirement for the Wyoming Concealed Firearm Permit (CFP).  You'll need to live in Wyoming for six months (I think), then show your certificate to the sheriff, pay the fees, fill out forms and in 30 days or less you'll have the Wyoming CFP.  Meanwhile, while you're waiting the six-seven months, simply carry your pistol in the open, no permit required  ;D

I'm with PF on this, 23 and no strings.  -NOW is the time.  If I were unattached and 23, knowing what I know now, I'd do'er.  Even if I were in school or school bound, I'd just go to school in WY.

I almost went to Alaska in the early-mid70's (post high school) to work on the pipeline.  I did not and I regret not doing so.  Ah, well.

A leeeetle more preparation would be best.  It would be better if you had a few thousand bucks, but not impossible.

Trade your Probe for a truck of some type, even if it is a smallish one with 2wd.

Your Probe will die an early death on the gravel roads, and it's a little tight to sleep in.  4wd would be best.  And a cap would give you a back-up place to sleep as well as protected space for moving.  Even at middle age, I still sleep in the back of the truck from time to time while on 'excursions'.  Boys will be boys.

Best of fortune to you!

This perfectly fits the "jack-of-all-trades" Wyoming culture.

It's probably been done before. You can store your guns with a nearby FSW compatriot, no doubt.

As to CCW, keep in mind a violation of this law is only a misdemeanor. Oh, and that neither state nor federal constitutions authorize laws controlling it.
