Four Retired Military families seek advice on moving to WY
« on: February 16, 2009, 08:43:52 PM »
I hope my posting is in keeping with the etiquette and manners of this site as I have never posted on a forum before

Let me introduce myself (first name only)

I am a Mother of 4 and wife to a disabled decorated Vet. We and the other four families of retired military, are 'family' and are looking for a free, safe, & family oriented place to live in case TSHTF (which seems to be imminent given our economy)

We live in CO & ID presently but wish to find property near like minded, conservative/libertarian folk.

My husband and one of the other husbands (Ret'd Col.) will be coming to WY next week looking at a property near Burlington to see what that area is like and to begin to look for, what we are sure most other folks are looking for:

good neighbors who will help us defend our liberty, safety and family's well being
good land to grow veggies, crops, forage
good water

about us: we garden, have livestock, hunt, fish, shoot well, homeschool, one of our families has a special needs son (Down Syndrome), and are all 'preppers' - we are well trained medically (Triage Nurse, EMT) and bring a broad range of skills that a community would find beneficial

I could go on, but will keep it brief and will gladly respond to any of your suggestions, questions or inquiries

anything you all could point us to, give us insight on, etc would be most appreciated

God Bless

Beth

my husband just read my post and asked that I clarify:

we are not a commune ! (he said i made it sound like we wear flowers in our hair or that TV show "Big Love" :>) )

my saying we are family is more my way of saying we are very close and have supported one another's families during tough times - we know we can trust the others

my family wishes to move to WY, 2 others want to be able to relocate in case TSHTF ... 1 wishes to move after he finishes his time in Afghanistan

anyway, hope this clarifies!

best

B

Hi, Beth,
From whence in ID and what route are the boys taking to Burlington.
I'm ex-Navy, living in Lander currently. If the boys are coming through this area and would have time for a coffee - could do.

Clean them,
Load them,
Keep them near at hand.
Remember Capt. Parker.

\\\"Les hommes sages n\\\'ont pas besoin conseil. Idiots ne le prendront pas.\\\"

Welcome Beth and families. We are very big on extended families here! :) If any of you come through the NE corner of the state, please drop in and visit us here too. We'd love to meet you. And I do hope you can all come to our campout in June. See the get together board elsewhere here.

I'm a retired RN, and always glad to welcome more medical people. We may need each other badly one day.

Welcome oxemoron. As Mama said we are already an "extended" family here at FSW If you plan to come through Laramie look me up. I and several others here are former/current military and thoroughly understand the extended family concept. I ets'd in 81 and still do not relate real well to civilians. I'm an electrician and know the ropes well here. Lemme know what I can do fer ya.

Welcome aboard Beth.

I looked at property near Burlington, came very close to buying (158 acres, good senior water rights & all in irrigation, for just $1000/acre in 2006 or so). I think it is a nice area, but a bit too plain to interest yuppies - which can be a good thing. FYI the Mormon community is pretty strong there. That does not bother me, I have Mormon friends, but I know it's a factor for some folks. One time a very strange and unusual thing happened to me when driving through Burlington: a teenager, walking down the street, waved at me. :)

Oh, we don't mind if you have flowers in your hair, either, heh.

Howdy Beth and your extended family! Hope each of you take some time to join in the conversations here. If you all can make it please schedule the third weekend in June to come to the get together.
PS, I grow flowers as well as veggies. :)

DONUTS??????

WHO SAID ANYTHING ABOUT DONUTS!!!!!!

Or, did they mean that they would be buying whatever kind of donuts I'd like?????

It sounds like they might not be coming through the Lander area, but if they decide to detour, let me know.
If they come up 13 from Craig, tell them to try to plan lunch in Baggs, WY. El Rio (Rt side of the road, mid-town) has the best Chiles Rellenos I have ever had in my entire life - and I was raised in the southwest - they have REAL queso blanco in them!!!!

Chiles Rellenos - with REAL queso blanco?

Oh, how I miss that. About the only thing I miss from California is good Mexican food... I make my own, but can't usually buy the stuff here. sigh.... Now you went and made me HUNGRY! :)

"we are well trained medically (Triage Nurse, EMT) and bring a broad range of skills that a community would find beneficial.."

In Burlington? Somewhere between tedium and apathy.

A school, grain elevator, one bar, a part-time Co-Op gas station and what passes for a grocery store.

But if you want to talk with a decent fellow whose family has lived in Burlington for generations... let me know.

WOW! thanks all

I am literally amazed at your kind responses and interest

I'll make sure the boys bring plenty of donuts and will look at the map to see how they'd travel best to stop & meet those of you who extended the welcome

the property in Burlington has so much to offer: senior water rights, 1/2 mile of the greybull, 5 wells, huge barn, good fencing, 2300 sq-ft home, etc for $365k - is that a good deal in WY now or are there other areas you all are aware of that we should investigate as well

and, yes, we are well trained medically & doing more - we asked a fellow from 'western rifle shooters assoc' to come down & teach 'grid down medical' course near where we live now - if any of you are interested please come down & stay with us if you wish to attend the course

more skills we'll bring to WY: 2 pilots with 11,000 hrs a piece; 2 of the boys served in 'non-uniformed' services (they are the ones with the most metal in them); 1 of the boys did secret satellite stuff ... none of them seem to know how to vacuum, change diapers or clean bathrooms however :>)

super on the table in 5 so have to run

please keep these posts coming - I love it! feel like we 'belong' in WY already!

and do please give us best advice on areas of WY to look at

best to you all

Beth

ps - we're not going to live the 'flowers in our hair' thing down are we?

Welcome!! This is sewing dove up in riverton--close to Lander. The area up in the north basin is awful close to Billings--only 1 hr or so--and very wide open for travelers. I of course am partial to this wind river area, thinking 1) its going to much more isolated when all h--l breaks loose, and 2) much easier to cut off contact with the suburban folk, and 3) has been kind of a banana belt this winter. But might try checking with realtys around the state. We are also military people, DH, BIL X2 all are vets, and we have a GREAT VA clinic here. We have gotten the best care imaginable from them. Remember that Wy has a $200 property tax discount for all vets each yr. Many small towns here that have good schools, real old timey types. And along with Big Ugly would love to offer hospitality if you are around. I'm a hospice nurse and DH is disabled. Have fun shopping around our state!!

thanks Judith

I so appreciate the hospitality

hopefully we won't (my husband) need the VA clinic for sometime as we just finished 3 years of him in & out of surgerys. Mayo Clinic (only place that could fix certain things) etc - he ain't 'new' but he is still above ground (his favorite saying) :>)

all our best to all you on this forum

Well, yeah. If you want excitement, you have to go to Basin. ;)

When people say they are interested in Burlington, I assume they mean a farm somewhere near Burlington. Get into Acme Mapper, enter "Burlington, Wyoming" and take a look. It is fun to check out properties this way, if you can locate them.

Seems like $365k is a good deal (depending on how much of the land is irrigated), esp if more than one family would be located there (farms really need more than one family, if you can find someone you get along with). You'd actually be pretty close to me. Keep in mind the major crops in Wyoming are kinda on the low value end, like hay and beets. But soon we won't have an economy at all, so that won't matter, eh? The value of a farm will be for survival.

Well, when the zombies attack, Burlington is pretty far off the beaten path (anything in Wyoming is, actually). Billings ain't that close, and anyway they are Montanans. It's not like being near Philadelphia. BTW Burlington altitude is 4400 feet, not so high (which is good if you are trying to grow something).
