SACRAMENTO — A good portion of California's tax gap consists of "use-tax" payments many people don't know they're required to make.
It's been the law since 1935, said Anita Gore, a spokeswoman for the state Board of Equalization.
The use tax is levied at the same rate as California's sales tax. It is applied to items bought out of state and intended for use in California.
These items could be just about anything — clothing, books, CDs, dogs and cats, medical equipment or whatever.
The tax was imposed originally to keep an "even playing field" between California businesses, which had to pay sales tax, and companies in other states that did not, Gore said.

There is a new buzz about how the state is going to aggressively pursue these taxes most often owed for internet purchases.
The proposals I've seen are for the original tax owed, interest, and a 10% penalty.
And a new enforcement arm, lavishly funded of course.
ONE MORE REASON, IF YOU NEEDED ONE, TO LEAVE CALIFORNIA AND MOVE TO WYOMING!!!
